From the Chair – July 2009
Well it’s now July and it’s time to think up something to write. Half a season gone
in the blink of an eye. Time truly does fly when you get old ….. and infirm!
So how’s it all gone so far? I think we were forecasting 4 things at the start of
the season :-
-
1st team challenging
-
2nd team challenging
-
Loads of players
-
Crap weather
As I write this we currently stand at 0 out of 4. So let’s look at them in order
:-
Well we ARE challenging to stay out of the relegation places. Our recent loss to
Church Fenton will hopefully prove to be a watershed (Water load of something that’s
for sure!!). Positivity and love need to form the way forward for the rest of the
season.
It may have helped if Claz ever had a full squad to pick from. It’s difficult to
get anything going when the same players are never available 2 weeks running. The
docking of points in the Thorner victory for playing an unregistered 62 year old
will live long in the memory as an example of the Wetherby League’s understanding
attitude to player shortages.
Well there should have been, but what with Winny’s car being a sensitive beast,
Asians working every other week and illness and injuries abound, it’s been a tough
old year. Claz has done well to keep spirits up and hopefully things will improve
soon
Say it quietly but it’s looking like a drought year! It’s 1976 all over again as
the SCG turns light brown and the crowds turn up in their 2s to enjoy the Summer
sound of leather on willow (or leather on ash if we’re batting).
Anyway, positivity, peace and love all around for the 2nd half of the
season. Let’s make it like 1967 (which most Sicklinghall players remember the first
time round) but maybe without the flowers in the hair!
And every cloud always has a silver lining. Sidd’s slashers are taking the evening
league by storm. If he doesn’t start losing soon he’ll have to come up with a pretty
good excuse to get out of being 1st team captain in 2010.
