Sicklinghall CC Vs Rufforth CC

"Barton junior steals the show "

After 4 away games on the trot the second eleven finally came home to massive applause from the home fans. With the boys having eleven men for only the third time this season the hall were hopeful of a second win on the bounce.

As the time ticked past 1.20 and only 4 opposition players at the ground a walkover was looking good but just as we were thinking of going to watch the first’s Rufforths missing 7 players turned up. The toss was done & lost by Claz and Sicklinghall were put into bat. Having amassed 258 last week the boys were hopeful of another big score. The opening pair of      Wes and Barton junior(George) put on 76  for the first wicket in just 14 overs, Wes the first one out with a huge total of 11 (Yes that’s right 11 out of 74 scored). As the crowd were shouting boring boring Wes he walked into the dressing room not be seen for the rest of the innings. George carried on scoring at will eventually hitting the ball straight back to the bowler after scoring a fantastic 84. Things moved on slowly with Sicklinghall eventually scoring 199 with all the batsmen wondering how George had been able to score so freely, especially Claz who wouldn’t have managed to hit the ball if it had a bell in it and somehow managing to get 42 not out (See it does help to pay the scorer).

After a wonderful tea made by Mrs Goddard Rufforth took to the field (eventually) looking at a total of 200 for victory. Rufforth kept the score board ticking over with the first wicket ammassing a solid 58. Wickets then fell at a steady pace with Rufforth always in the game until there other opener fell with them needing 70 of the last 10 overs. The bowling partnership of Barton senior and Barton junior working well together Barton junior winning the wicket talking total with 4 wickets to his dads 3. Dan Ferris came on with 1 wicket left which he took with his first ball. Rufforth  been the first team to be bowled out by the seconds this season.

A couple of mentions must go to Dave Baxter & Andy Goddard for 2 excellent catches and most of all to Bernard Ferris for playing at short notice making us have eleven men and probably saving us at least 15 – 20 runs in the field.

Sicklinghall CC Vs Bramhope CC

"Seven and out"

After a promising start to the season SCC 2nds were back to trying to find a team. On the brink of calling the game off due to only having 6 players Graham Crooks came out of retirement putting his golf clubs down for the day and coming to help out.

After many a phone call from Claz and Tony we deceided to go with what we had 7. So off to Bramhope we went minus 6 of last weeks winning team still hoping that by some kind of miracle we could pull it out of the bag.

Winning the toss Claz deceided to bat first. Here the first problem came no openers. After looking around the dressing room & not finding Straus or Cook hiding in the cupboard went for the next best option himself & the Indian Express. Things started slowly with Claz doing a Wes and batting out a maiden then another in the third. The Indian Express was the first to fall missing a straight one which brought Crooks senior to the crease. Things started to progress slowly until Claz thinking he was Straus or Cook left a straight one which promptly hit off stump. Next in Matt played all round another straight one, then Walton junior Tom Wilson came in hit a great looking 4 before also succumbing. Biffa hung around for a while moving the score into the 50’s then also he went as well. Dan Ferris next in who got a single to put Graham onto strike. Next ball Graham hit one straight to covers and that was the end of that. All out for 53.

With the time still only just past 2.30 and teas not made yet the decision was made to turn straight round & have teas at the end. Then the next problem came to light how do you defend 53 with only 5 fielders a keeper (if you can call Claz that) and a bowler. Tony suggested 4 slips & a gully but Claz went with the spread out where you can option.  Indian Express Annand opened for the second time of the day this time with the ball in his hand, with Matt coming in from the other end. Then it happened Annand took his first wicket of the season Bramhope 1 for 1. Things slowly slipped away after that with Tony getting the other wicket & us losing by 8 wickets. Teas were had & then it was of to see if the firsts could win. (I thought we were bad).

Sicklinghall CC Vs Scholes CC

"Biffa the superstar"

Here we are again the start of yet another season.  The 2nd eleven turned up at the SCG confident we can bounce straight back up after last season’s relegation. The SCG looked in prime condition with a hard wicket.

The loss of George Barton the goby teenager was going to be a big loss & on the morning of the match we still only had 9 players. By 11.30 we were back to full strength with the juniors helping out (Andy Goddard & Arthur Bateson).

After speaking to some of the senior members of the team captain Andy (claz) Challenger went to toss up after being advised by 50% to bat first & 50% to bowl first. On winning the toss it was decided we bat first mainly down to the fact it would be easier to get teas sorted out.

With no George to open the batting Wes & Addy went in. Addy as normal set of like a hurricane making Wes run quick singles. Things were looking good until Addy picked out a deep fielder out was caught. In went Blackie who was looking good & moving the score on well until he went as well. Claz  soon came & went but not till after scoring a quick fire 17. Godders was next in who played a great innings & even managed not to get run out by Annand until getting stumped on 35 going for the runs with a few over’s left. A late contribution by the tail eventually helped us to get to 156 for 8, Wes top scoring with 36.

Teas came & went & Sicklinghall took to the field feeling confident they could bowl Scholes out & take the win. Openers Anand & Matty ran in with plenty of expectation but no wickets to show for their efforts, so after 16 over’s with the score on 50 for 0 Claz turned to Blackie & Biffa. Blackie broke the partnership in his first over with biffa taking the other opener out in his second over. Biffa then went on a wicket taking spree taking out the entire middle order with some excellent bowling finishing with figures of 11 over’s 6 wickets for 11 runs. A promising spell of 4 over’s from Dan Ferris taking over from Blackie at the bottom end was followed with the return of Matty who took 2 wickets in his last over. Scholes finishing on 122 for 9 with Anand unable to take the final wicket in the last over of the game.

So a promising start for the seconds with 5 points in the bag & a away trip to Bramhope to look forward to next week.  Feilding point would have gone to Dan Ferris for some good fielding at point & taking a great catch at backward square leg, but who let himself down with a dropped catch so point goes to Addy for taking 3 catches behind the stumps.
